Commercial buildings empty after Gisborne quake

9:56 pm on 19 December 2008

A year after a strong earthquake rocked Gisborne some damaged commercial buildings still have not been repaired.

The quake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, struck about 9pm on 20 December 2007.

Insurance claims for damage to commercial buildings and private homes totalled almost $60 million.

Gisborne District Council resource consents manager Ian Petty says some buildings have been fixed and one has been demolished.

But seven of nine buildings classed as dangerous are still empty.

He says disagreements between building owners and insurance companies over the level of repair work needed is partly to blame.
