The injuries to a baby at the centre of an investigation in Kerikeri may leave the boy permanently blind and brain damaged.
The baby, aged 15 months, has undergone surgery for serious injuries to his head and now is in a critical condition.
Police have launched a criminal investigation and are trying to establish where the baby was when he was injured and who is responsible.
They are speaking to immediate family and other people who may have been at the address where the baby is believed to have been injured.
Inspector Chris Scahill says police are determined to find who is responsible for the child's injuries.
He says it's very early days in the investigation.
Friday night flight
The baby was first taken to hospital in Northland and was then flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland on Friday night.
The ambulance service says it received a call from a family member just after 7pm on Friday.
Mr Scahill says the boy was living with his mother in Kerikeri at the time of the incident.
She is now with him at Starship Hospital, along with other family members and friends.
