Fiji hits out at New Zealand's 'bullying' tactics

9:00 pm on 22 December 2008

New Zealand has been castigated by Fiji's interim government for what it describes as bullying of Pacific nations.

Fiji has been threatening to expel high commissioner Caroline McDonald over New Zealand's continued travel ban on members of the Fiji military, government and their families.

Fiji's interim attorney-general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, issued a statement on Monday saying New Zealand did not treat his country with dignity and respect.

He says New Zealand is bullying the Pacific and does not treat Fiji with dignity and respect.

He says this lack of diplomacy would not be tolerated in any other country, including in Fiji.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully is not commenting.
