Butchers thwart liquor store robbery

3:12 pm on 29 December 2008

Two butchers came to the rescue of a West Auckland liquor store owner who was being robbed by a man with a knife.

Police say the intruder tried to enter King Dick's Liquor in Great North Road while it was being opened at about 8am on Monday.

When the woman screamed, two nearby butchers chased the man and managed to hold onto him until police arrived a few minutes later.

Two other members of the public also helped detain the man. Nobody was injured.

One of the butchers says he did not realise the man had a knife, but he could not stand by and watch as his neighbour screamed for help.
