Mumbai evidence handed to Pakistan

9:48 pm on 5 January 2009

India says it has handed evidence to Pakistan linking the Mumbai attacks in November to militant "elements" in that country.

Gunmen stormed buildings in Mumbai on 26 November, killing at least 173 people.

India's Foreign Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, says Pakistan must act on the evidence and implement the bilateral commitments it has made to India.

India blames Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for the attacks but LeT and the Pakistani government have denied any involvement.

Pakistan's government says it is reviewing the contents of the dossier. It has repeatedly urged India to provide evidence that Pakistani militants were involved in the attacks, and relations between the two countries have been under severe strain.

Meanwhile, the United States Assistant Secretary of State, Richard Boucher, has arrived in Pakistan for talks aimed at reducing tensions between the two neighbours.
