Power restored after tornado hits Central Otago town

Power has been restored to 450 homes and repairs are underway after a tornado tore through a Central Otago town.

The tornado hit Bannockburn, near Cromwell, on Thursday afternoon.

Delta Ultilities system control manager Graeme Johnson said the tornado ripped off part of the roof of the Bannockburn Hotel, which then hit power lines, causing the outage.

Bannockburn Hotel manager Dave Gillespie said about a third of the roof was torn off, and roofing iron was tangled in the power lines.

Mr Gillespie said a temporary roof has been put up and the hotel and bar are still open.
