Claim Govt scraps board through 'political spite'

Former Justice Minister Annette King says it's pure political spite that the Criminal Justice Advisory Board has been scrapped.

The Government has confirmed it will get rid of the board, which was set up in April last year, to give advice to justice sector ministers.

The Justice Minister Simon Power says the $90,000 it cost to run will instead be put towards a Victim Compensation Scheme.

The scheme aims to provide greater access to services for victims of crime.

Mr Power says he wrote to members in late December to formally disband the board.

But Ms King says the board was set up after recommendations from the Ombudsman.

She says the idea of the board was to bring in a range of views from experienced New Zealanders, ranging from the judiciary to those who work with victims of crime and those who work with criminals.

Ms King says it's arrogant of the Government to consider it doesn't need to consider their opinions.
