Burst water main causes Penrose flooding

Engineers in Auckland have isolated a burst water main that caused flooding in an industrial area of the Auckland suburb of Penrose on Monday.

The break in the water main at the intersection of Church Street East and Industry Road shortly after 1am left what firefighters described as a river in the area.

Fire crews were working at damaged buildings.

Property manager for one of the buildings, Peter Sanders, said the water had caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage. Mr Sanders said the water main that burst appeared to be an old pipe.

It is the second time the water main has burst in less than two years.

Engineers from water company Watercare isolated the break and started repairs on Monday morning.

A number of businesses in the Penrose area were affected by the flooding but Watercare says residential customers would not have experienced any change to their supply.

The flooding had threatened a railway line in the area, however the line remained open.
