Glitch on new Northern Gateway toll road

1:39 pm on 28 January 2009

There have been more teething problems on the new toll road north of Auckland.

The $365 million dollar Northern Gateway road opened on Sunday, and tolls were charged from midnight Monday.

However, two of the four machines used to make cash payments were not working on Wednesday.

Some motorists have complained it would have been less time consuming had they stayed on the free route.

However, traffic was been running smoothly on the 7.5km stretch of road that bypasses Orewa and and Waiwera.

On opening day, some 20,000 vehicles used the new road, slowing traffic to a crawl for a time.
