Building consents plummet

10:16 pm on 27 February 2009

The number of building consents issued has fallen by more than half in January, its lowest level since records began 17 years ago.

Statistics New Zealand figures show 949 permits were issued last month, when seasonally adjusted, down 52% on the same period last year.

For the first time in more than a decade, the value of consents issued for commercial and industrial buildings exceeded the value of consents issued for houses and apartments.
