The police in Canterbury say a drop in the number of people being hospitalised after road accidents is no reason to become complacent about safety.
In the first three months of last year, 107 people were sent to hospital after a road accident; six months later, that number dropped to 71.
Canterbury Road Traffic Manager Neville Hyland says he believes the number dropped after police cracked down on bad driving behaviour.
Mr Hyland says the figures are good news, but that does not mean people should ignore road safety messages. He says in the next few months, Canterbury police will be targetting speeding drivers to help reduce the number of serious accidents.
