Kakapo population rises

Updated at 9:59am on 11 March 2009

The population of the kakapo is now more than 100.

The kakapo is a flightless parrot and one of New Zealand's rarest birds. Its numbers reached 105 on Wednesday morning with the arrival of new chicks.

In addition, the Department of Conservation says 24 more eggs could still hatch, which could mean to 30 chicks this year.

Programme manager Deirdre Vercoe says a good crop of rimu fruit is what spurred the breeding this season.
