Tighter security mooted at Waikato hospital

5:10 pm on 13 March 2009

Security at Waikato hospital is being examined to combat an escalation of criminal activity.

An estimated 5,300 people are on the site on any one day - meaning it's like a small town.

Food and breast pumps have been stolen from the hospital; a doctor was attacked by a drunk patient on 28 February; and trespass notices have been served to gang associates.

The district police commander has met hospital officials and the police will undertake an evaluation project.

The hospital says stationing a community constable on its grounds may be an option.

However, any new arrangements with the police will not replace its existing security.
