Twelve electorates to get extra administrative funding

5:12 pm on 13 March 2009

Six Maori electorates and six big general electorates will get a funding increase of $40,000 each to help them service their constituents.

The seats are held by four Maori Party MPs, four National MPs and two Labour MPs.

Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee says the funding will enable the electorates to hire another staff member.

Mr Brownlee says ensuring constituents' access to their MPs in electorates of more than 20,000 square kilometres has been a problem since MMP was introduced in 1996.

He says the increase was recommended by an independent review and is part of the Maori Party's post-election agreement with National.

The extra funding does not apply to the seventh Maori seat - Tamaki Makaurau - because of it is smaller and urban in character.
