Minister promises details on research funding plans

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Biosecurity is promising some details soon on the Government's research funding plans.

The Government made a commitment to increase research and development funding when it dumped the previous government's $700 million Fast Forward Fund, set up to boost investment in pastoral and food industry research.

David Carter told a forestry biosecurity conference in Rotorua on Tuesday that the Fast Forward concept had some good points but would have been a clumsy funding mechanism.

Mr Carter says he is in the process of preparing a Budget bid for a programme to replace it.

He says industry cornerstone investors have shown a high degree of support for the plan being developed and the aim is to spend more money on an annual basis than the Fast Forward initiative proposed.
