Rest home funding review urged

3:36 pm on 21 March 2009

A coroner is calling for an urgent review of rest home funding levels following an inquiry into the death of an elderly man in Wellington.

William Culley, 88, died in August 2006 after being admitted to Wellington Hospital from the Alexandra Rest Home. He had been injured in a fall.

Coroner Garry Evans has found that Mr Culley did not receive the level of care he should have.

A lawyer for the rest home told the inquest that rest homes don not receive enough funding to provide fulltime professional healthcare.

Mr Evans says the funding must be urgently reviewed.
