Harawira supports nephews accused of PM's assault

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira is unrepentant over his support of two nephews who have been charged with assaulting Prime Minister John Key at Waitangi celebrations.

Mr Harawira attended court with the accused, John and Wikatana Popata, earlier this month over the incident in February.

Mr Harawira was rebuked by the Maori Party's co-leaders after comments he made in a newspaper column defending his nephews' actions.

At Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Harawira was questioned about his recent statements and behaviour, and whether his fellow MPs had raised concerns.

Mr Harawira says the Maori Party leadership is relaxed with him supporting whanau, or family.

He says he will not offer an apology to Mr Key, as one has not been sought.

Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples acknowledges Mr Harawira's behaviour may not be the best look for an MP, but says he is well intentioned.

Mr Harawira says, contrary to rumours, he has no intention of leaving the Maori Party.
