Milk prices vary widely, survey shows

A Northland thrift campaigner says he has had hundreds of responses to an online survey about the price of milk.

Frank Newman is investigating price variations around the country via his website, Living Off the Smell of an Oily Rag.

Mr Newman says people are paying vastly different amounts - anything from $2.50 to $5 - for a two-litre container of milk, depending on where they live.

He says Christchurch prices are among the cheapest because of the presence of small independent producers there.

Contributors to his website are recommending powdered skim milk as a much cheaper alternative to bottled milk.
