Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin has signed a contract for the construction of the city's stadium.

The $165 million contract with Hawkins Construction means work can start at the Awatea Street site in May.

Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry says the project will create more than 600 jobs over the next two years.

Mr Farry says the project is still on track to be completed by the end of July 2011, in time for the Rugby World Cup.

The stadium will be called Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza.
