A man who admitted murdering a Korean student on the West Coast has appealed against a minimum prison sentence of 21 years imposed on him.
Lawyer Greg King told the Court of Appeal that the sentencing Judge did not adequately taken account of a guilty plea by his client, Hayden McKenzie, to the murder of Jae Hyeon Kim in 2003.
He said McKenzie also co-operated with the police in helping locate his victim's body.
He submitted that some notice should have been taken of the fact he had already served almost half of a minimum sentence of 10 years imposed for an earlier murder.
Crown lawyer Annabel Markham said McKenzie had committed two separate 'hate killings' fours years apart and his culpability was at the upper end of the scale.
The Court has reserved its decision.
