$450 million Wellington Airport expansion planned

10:06 am on 1 May 2009

A $450 million revamp of Wellington Airport is being proposed that would increase the size of the terminal by 70% and provide 14 more aircraft gates.

The airport's 2030 master plan, made public on Thursday, also proposes a new multi-storey carpark, and improved transport links to cater for a projected 10 million passengers a year.

Airport chief executive Steven Fitzgerald says 11,500 new jobs would be created.

Wellington Airport has also proposed realigning Calabar Road, which runs beside the airport, to meet compliance rules for the wingspans of large planes.

The airport already owns a number of properties along the stretch of road, but would need to acquire six more by 2020 in order to comply.

NZ Bus, Wellington City Council and Wellington Chamber of Commerce have approved of the plans, while Positively Wellington Tourism says mounting a promotional campaign in Australia is vital to ensure the success of the airport vision.

Public feedback is now being sought, and the plans should be finalised by the end of the year.
