Children affected by fathers with mental health disorders: UK research

9:54 am on 5 May 2009

Researchers in Britain say children whose fathers have mental health disorders are likely to have psychiatric or behavioural disorders themselves.

The Oxford University researchers say there's been too much focus on mothers' mental health issues.

They say boys in particular could be affected if their father has depression or is an alcoholic.

The Oxford team says the role of men has been "underemphasised" and fathers have more influence on their children's development than previously thought.
