Baby safety recommendation by Coroner

9:33 am on 8 May 2009

The Ministry of Health is being urged to make it clear that babies under the age of six months are at risk of death when they share a bed with adults and siblings.

Wellington Coroner Garry Evans has included the recommendation in findings from an inquest held last year.

Mr Evans says the safest place is a cot beside the parents' bed.

The ministry says it will study the recommendation, but differences remain of opinion and parents can hold conflicting views.
