Coromandel police are urging people to stay away from the scene of a suspicious fire that destroyed an historic building in the town on Sunday.
Constable Peter Easton says emergency services were called to the old Moehau Tea Rooms on Wharf Road, about 2.50am.
Mr Easton says firefighters were able to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring buildings, however the tea rooms were almost completely destroyed.
He says what remains could collapse at any time.
The building had been vacant for at least five years.
