Three new rail lines proposed for Auckland

10:31 am on 19 May 2009

A proposal for three new metro rail lines in Auckland, including a link from the city to the airport, is being considered by Auckland Regional Council's transport committee.

A report by Australian infrastructure company Parsons Brinckerhoff, aimed at working out how to maximise rail performance by 2041, has suggested the new lines.

A rail link would run from the city to Onehunga, Auckland International Airport and Puhinui.

A metro line is suggested from Massey on the North Shore through to the city, Auckland University and Dominion Road.

The report proposes an underground rail service from Manukau to Botany to Panmure, the city and Point Chevalier.

The transport committee is due to discuss the ideas at its meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
