Auckland International Airport says the number of overseas visitors arriving through its gates rose by about 10% to 253,000 in April, boosted by an increase in travellers from Australia and the timing of the Easter holiday.

The country's main tourist gateway says it benefited from a greater push to get Australians to come here, with arrivals jumping 23%.

That more than offset falls from those coming from North America and Asian nations, while the number of visitors from Britain remained steady.

The level of domestic patronage fell 6% to 479,000 during the month.

The number of flights fell 6%, which the airport puts down to Qantas' decision to cut back its domestic services in December.
