Child health experts have told Parliament that nowhere near enough is being done to prevent accidents and injuries in children and young people.

Leaders of the Paediatric Society told told Parliament's Health Select Committee on Wednesday that accidents and injuries are the leading cause of death among New Zealand children.

They said New Zealand also ranks worst in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development for trauma deaths in those under the age of 19.

They called for a national network of paediatric trauma services, including better data collection and a wide range of related measures.

These include mandatory 20 kilometre per hour zones around schools, restricting the minimum age for a full driver's licence to at least 18 and better child restraints for children in cars
