Labour candidate guarding against complacency in by-election

9:07 am on 8 June 2009

The Labour candidate for the Mount Albert by-election says it is important to guard against complacency in the last week of campaigning, after a poll put him well in the lead.

A One News Colmar Brunton poll has David Shearer with 59% support.

National's Melissa Lee was on 21%, Green Party co-leader Russel Norman was on 15% and ACT's Jon Boscowen was just over 3%.

The poll of 500 voters had a margin of error of 4.4%.

Mr Shearer told Morning Report he was not taking anything for granted.

He said he was going into the final week focused on earning every vote he can and getting people to the poll on Saturday - the "one poll that really counts".

Ms Lee said she is not letting a poll distract her from the final week of campaigning.

Labour has held the seat since it was established in 1946.
