A 43-year-old man has appeared in court in Melbourne charged with murdering underworld figure Des Moran.

Mr Moran was gunned down at a cafe on Monday.

The accused, Geoffrey Armour, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday sporting a black right eye - which he pointed to several times during the hearing - and cuts to his face.

The police allege that he was one of two men who shot Mr Moran at his favourite cafe in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Ascot Vale.

Armour sat in the dock behind a protective glass shield, trying to hide his face from the media and the public in the courtroom.

Magistrate Dan Muling ruled that the media cannot publish photographs or sketches of Armour after prosecutor Kim Swadesir said there might have been witnesses who saw part of his face.

"It is the police case that Mr Armour was not entirely disguised during the incident, there were portions of his face that were visible," Ms Swadesir said.

Mr Muling remanded Armour in custody to appear for a committal mention on 9 September, the same day his girlfriend Suzanne Kane and Mr Moran's sister-in-law Judy Moran are due to appear on charges of being an accessory after the murder.

The police are still looking for the alleged second gunman and a third man who is believed to have been a getaway driver.

Investigations also continued on Thursday into a suspicious fire that destroyed part of Judy Moran's home on Tuesday night.
