Police say they will not pursue an assault complaint against government minister Nick Smith.

Ross Cooper, of Nelson, claimed he was assaulted by Dr Smith the city's main street last Saturday.

The National MP for Nelson says he was approached by Mr Cooper about midday while returning to his car in Rutherford Street who wanted to talk to him about his power bill.

The minister says when he explained that he could not talk to Mr Cooper because he was pressed for time, the man became angry and tried to stop Dr Smith from getting into his car.

Police say witnesses have confirmed Mr Cooper was acting in a loud and aggressive manner towards Dr Smith.

Police are attempting to arrange a meeting between the men to try and resolve the matter.
