Picket protest over rubbish contract

A group of residents on Waiheke Island is refusing to back down in a dispute with Auckland City Council over rubbish. A protest was hedld on Wednesday morning.

The islanders lost a bid to stop a $23 million waste disposal contract going to a company based off the island, TransPacific Industries.

The group picketed the first day of work for the company.

It claims the local operator was more environmentally friendly and provided more jobs.
