Greater efforts needed to grow food in Cuba - Castro

8:22 am on 27 July 2009

The president of Cuba has warned that further budget cuts lie ahead and the island must make greater efforts to feed itself.

Addressing a rally in the eastern city of Holguin to mark Revolution Day, Raul Castro said Cuba has to reduce its dependence on food imports by cultivating more land.

He also said more needs to be done to advance a programme to let private farmers cultivate unused state land in Cuba.
