The trial of a Tauranga woman charged with the murder of a 14-month-old girl in her foster care has begun in the High Court at Rotorua.

Karen Robinson, 35, previously had name suppression.

She was originally charged with assault after the death of the child in January 2006, but this was upgraded after a post-mortem.

The toddler died at Auckland's Starship Hospital four days after being admitted.

A sibling of the dead child was with the same foster family in Paengaroa at the time, but was subsequently moved.
