Permanent name suppression has been granted to a woman who admits killing her new-born baby.

The 30-year-old was sentenced on Friday morning in the High Court at Wellington on one charge of infanticide.

The court heard that the woman's first three children had all been taken from her after she had had difficulties caring for them.

Devastated when she became pregnant again, she gave birth in a toilet at her home, smothered the baby with a pillow and buried it in the garden in a cardboard box.

Justice Mallon sentenced her to two years' intensive supervision. She must undertake psychiatric treatment and counselling and inform her probation officer if she becomes pregnant again.
