Drugs found in birthday bag for prisoner

11:47 am on 11 August 2009

Auckland Prison officers have intercepted a belated birthday card and gift for a prisoner which contained a bag of methamphetamine.

The Corrections Department says intercepting contraband items in the mail is now easier due to legislative changes: officers no longer need reasonable grounds to suspect something is awry.

The department says the message is clear: prisoners attempting to get drugs sent to them and members of the public sending them, will be caught.
