MP to hitchhike to cut his travel expenses

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira is to hitch-hike around his electorate to cut travel costs.

The MP for Te Tai Tokerau is among those with the highest expenses in Parliament, with travel costs of almost $67,000 in the first half of this year.

When the figures were released, Mr Harawira said he would not apologise and would not be slowing down, but now the MP says he is going to try to cut back on costs.

Mr Harawira says it's difficult to see how he can make savings, but one thing he can do is hitch-hike more often.

He says he enjoys hitching a ride, as it allows him to talk to people in a relaxed way about what is important to them.

Te Tai Tokerau covers the top of the North Island and includes the North Shore of Auckland and parts of West Auckland.
