Prime Minister John Key says he still has confidence in the new president of the National Party, Peter Goodfellow, amid reports he is under pressure to resign.

Mr Goodfellow was chosen for the position two and a half weeks ago.

Radio New Zealand's political staff say it is understood momentum has been building among some party board members earlier in the week for Mr Goodfellow to be replaced.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says he always has confidence in the president of the National Party.

Roger Bridge, a long-standing board member of the National Party, says Mr Goodfellow is under no pressure to resign.

Mr Bridge says Mr Goodfellow retains the support and confidence of a majority of the board of the National Party.
