The company that runs the port of Timaru says staff are being kept well informed in the wake of Fonterra's decision to reduce the volume of its exports through Timaru.
Fonterra is planning to make much more use of the ports of Auckland, Tauranga, Napier and Lyttelton.
The amount of product it moves through the ports of Taranaki and Timaru will be cut by 65% and 80% respectively.
PrimePort Timaru chief executive Jeremy Boys says the company has met with the port's 70 full time and casual staff, and is keeping them up to date with what's happening.
He says it's still too early to give details of the outcomes of Fonterra's decision on the port.
