Police in West Auckland say a post-mortem has been completed on a newborn baby but they will not disclose the cause of death.
Police and St John Ambulance staff discovered the boy just before 5pm on Monday at a property on Barron Drive in the suburb of Green Bay.
The boy is believed to be between 30 weeks and 36 weeks old from gestation.
Police say the child's relatives are helping them with their inquiries and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
