A Victorian government minister missing for two nights in sub-zero conditions for two nights has been rescued from the Australian state's alpine region.

Tim Holding, the Minister for Tourism, Water and Finance, set off on Saturday morning for the solo hike on Mount Feathertop, north-east of Melbourne.

Police had said he was well equipped and they were confident of finding him alive

The ABC reports that Mr Holding was been winched aboard a police helicopter after being spotted by a media helicopter on Tuesday morning.

He was stranded in rough terrain and waving a blanket to attract attention.

More than 80 searchers had taken part in the mission to find Mr Holding.
