Suspicious fire destroys Gisborne building

9:31 am on 2 September 2009

A commercial blind and curtain building in downtown Gisborne was destroyed by a suspicious fire on Tuesday night.

The Fire Service says the building was two-thirds engulfed when fire crews arrived at about 9.30pm, and occupants in a flat at the front of the building had a lucky escape.

Sixteen firefighters took an hour to bring the blaze under control, and it took five further hours to dampen down hotspots.
