Police in Rotorua caught 138 people not wearing seatbelts, or driving unrestrained passengers, during a one-day campaign on Wednesday.

Twenty-six of them had unrestrained passengers aged under 15. Eighteen of these were pre-schoolers.

Two people who were stopped and fined on Wednesday morning were ticketed again in the afternoon.

The last time police ran a seatbelt campaign was in April, when the numbers were described as disappointing.

Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes says it is frustrating the figures have worsened.

Another seatbelt campaign will be held soon.
