Lamb to be tracked through supply chain

Dunedin based meat co-operative Silver Fern Farms has launched a pilot programme to track lamb through the supply chain, starting at the farm.

Chief executive Keith Cooper says the trial, being run with the help of the Livestock Improvement Corporation, will initially involve about 150 farmers and 150,000 lambs destined for export.

He says market research indicates consumers want to know more about the food they are buying.

Silver Fern plans to run a pilot programme early next year for beef and venison.
