Waikato hospital hires security manager

7:34 am on 8 September 2009

Waikato Hospital has appointed a security manager after a string of crimes that has included an emergency doctor being kicked and punched.

There have been other assaults and patients' food and items belonging to staff have been stolen.

A recent police review recommended a security manager be hired.

The hospital admits it is one of the last in the country to do so.

Property and infrastructure manager Colin Hearnden says the police report also recommended cutting back vegetation that provides cover for people who shouldn't be on site.

Mr Hearnden says the hospital will also look at installing electronically controlled doors.

Waikato Hospital is Australasia's largest hospital campus.
