Rotorua police have been examining a stolen car used as the getaway vehicle in the robbery of a Ngongotaha bank on Friday afternoon.

A Westpac branch in the town was held up by two men armed with a double-barrelled shotgun and a black pistol.

The firearms were pointed at two customers, including one accompanied by a 12-year-old girl.

One of the customers was told to hand over the cash he had just taken out.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Colby says it was a busy time when the robbery occurred, and the gunmen were brazen and dangerous.

He says he's thankful the bank staff and customers did the right things to ensure no one was hurt.
