Plans for giant sculpture near airport scrapped

Plans for a $3 million giant fish hook to mark the northern entrance to Wellington have been abandoned out of fear it would be a hazard to aircraft.

The Hook of Maui and Receding Waters series of sculptures was designed to run alongside Wellington's northern motorway.

But the project ran into problems after the Civil Aviation Authority objected to a giant laser rising from the top of the fish hook.

Wellington City Council and the Sculpture Trust say they will re-run the design competition for a new sculpture.
