Beach care warnings still apply

Health officials in Auckland are still warning people to be cautious at the beaches where some dogs have died from poisoning.

Fifteen dogs became sick and five died, after visiting beaches around the Hauraki Gulf. Scientists blame tetrodotoxin, a poison found in sea slugs.

The Auckland regional public health service says there have been no new cases of poisoning in the past two weeks.

But now daylight saving has started, Medical Officer of Health Simon Baker says those taking advantage of longer evenings still need to watch pets and children carefully - especially on Narrow Neck and Cheltenham beaches where the sea slugs were found.
