Four committed to trial in gaming fraud case

10:14 am on 28 September 2009

A former MP is among four people who will stand trial for their role in a complex gaming trust fraud.

The four, who all have name suppression, are facing 17 charges brought by the Serious Fraud Office relating to dishonestly using documents to obtain charitable trust funds for their benefit.

The names of many of the charities involved and some of the witnesses have also been suppressed.

The Serious Fraud Office claims the former MP and another defendant organised a dishonest conspiracy involving children's books, which enabled them to extract funds from a charitable gaming trust.

Prosecutor John Upton QC says the former MP produced a receipt book to investigators and lied about the contents of it.

All four were committed to stand trial on Wednesday, when pleas of not guilty were entered.

They will reappear in the Auckland District Court in December.
