Killings at stadium by security forces

Security forces are reported to have opened fire on opposition protesters in and around a stadium in the capital of Guinea, in West Africa, killing at least 10 people.

Guinean Human Rights Organisation president Thierno Maadjou Sow says he has counted nine bodies at the stadium in Conakry.

He says the organisation has not yet been able to reach the stands in the stadium where there are more dead.

The BBC reports violence marks the deepening of a political crisis in Guinea, which is being run by a military junta, after the death of President Lansana Conte, who had ruled for more than two decades.

Coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara initially pledged not to run in a presidential vote planned for January, but now seems likely to stand.
