Milk strike suspended in Europe

12:47 pm on 29 September 2009

European dairy farmers have suspended a two-week milk supply strike until next week when EU agriculture ministers are to meet to discuss proposals to end the crisis in the dairy sector.

But the farmers warned they would restart the protest over the collapse of milk prices if they were not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.

The ministers will discuss French proposals for intervention and aid to the dairy producers.

About 80,000 dairy farmers across Europe have suspended milk supply to customers and dumped millions of litres of milk.
